The Tacoma is three trucks on our shelves: the 2nd Gen (2005-2015), the 3rd Gen (2016-2023) and the 4th Gen (2024 and newer). A few cab racks span 2005-2023, but bumpers, sliders and bed racks are cut for one generation. Every pick below carries a generation tag.

The short answer: buy recovery and a way to sleep first, then a roof or bed rack, then sliders and a front bumper, then the rear bumper and lights. We compare roof racks from Prinsu, Front Runner and DV8, bed racks from Front Runner, Body Armor 4x4, DV8 and upTOP, front bumpers from Body Armor 4x4, DV8, CBI and Rago, and sliders from Body Armor 4x4, CBI and C4. We use only fit and specs the maker publishes. Where a maker does not publish a number, we say "not published".

Which Tacoma roof rack should you buy?

If a rooftop tent is in the plan, buy the Prinsu Pro for your years. It is the only cab rack here with a published load rating. Pick the Slimline II if you already run Front Runner accessories. On a 4th Gen with a sunroof, the DV8 rack works, but plan for one less crossbar.

Roof load

Use the lower of the rack rating and the roof rating in your Tacoma owner's manual. Count the tent and the people in it when parked.

Tacoma bed racks and bed storage

A bed rack moves the tent and the heavy gear off the cab roof and keeps the bed open underneath. Match the rack to your generation and bed length.

Fit check before you order

The 2nd Gen Hiline fits 2012-2015 only, not 2005-2011. The DV8 MTO does not keep factory fog lights or the factory TRD skid. The DV8 Spec Series does not fit the Trailhunter or the TRD Pro. The CBI Covert and the Body Armor 4x4 Hiline both need some trimming of the factory plastics.

Pair a winch bumper with a winch rated for your truck. The 12,000 lb Recovery Winch with Steel Cable - Wired & Wireless Remotes is a 12,000 lb winch, so match it to the bumper limit. CBI lists its 4th Gen Covert for winches up to 10,000 lb, so on that bumper pick a smaller winch.

On a 4th Gen, C4 also makes full skid plates for 2024-2026 that cover the radiator back to the transfer case.

Lights for any Tacoma

Lights are universal, so fit is about the mount, not the truck. The Blackout cube spot and cube flood fit ditch, bumper and bed rack mounts that take a cube light. The 30 in Blackout light bar needs a mount that accepts a 30 in bar. Confirm clearance at your mount before you order.

Sleeping in a Tacoma bed

A Tacoma long bed takes the Luno mid-size 6 ft mattress. Luno does not list a cut for the 5 ft bed, so a 5 ft bed sleep fit is not published. For more on bed builds and racks, see our Tacoma overlanding build guide.

What to skip on a Tacoma

  • Parts that do not name your generation and years.
  • A 3rd Gen part on a 2024+ truck, or the reverse.
  • A rooftop tent on a rack with no published rating.
  • A winch bumper before you have a winch rated for it.

Do 3rd Gen Tacoma parts fit a 2024 Tacoma?

No. The 2024 and newer Tacoma is the 4th Gen, on a new frame and body. Bumpers, sliders, roof racks and bed racks are sold as separate 2016-2023 and 2024+ kits. Check the years in the product title before you order.

Which roof racks fit a 2nd Gen Tacoma?

The Prinsu Pro and the Front Runner Slimline II both list the Double Cab from 2005 through 2023, so one rack covers the 2nd and 3rd Gen Double Cab. Prinsu calls its install no-drill. Front Runner calls the Slimline II no-drill and says it works with the shark fin antenna.

Will a winch bumper keep my factory TRD skid plate?

It depends on the bumper. On a 3rd Gen, the Body Armor 4x4 Hiline and Pro Series keep the factory TRD skid, and the DV8 MTO does not. On a 4th Gen, the Body Armor 4x4 Hiline keeps the factory TRD skid. For the others, the maker does not publish skid compatibility on the page we link, so ask us first.

Does the DV8 Spec Series bumper fit every 4th Gen?

No. DV8 lists it as not for the Trailhunter or the TRD Pro, and cutting is required.

How much can a Tacoma roof rack carry?

Prinsu rates its Pro Tacoma racks at 700 lb dynamic and 1,200 lb static. DV8 and Front Runner do not publish a load number on the pages we link. Your truck's own roof rating, from the owner's manual, is the real limit. Use the lower number.

Can I sleep in a Tacoma bed?

Yes, with the Luno mid-size 6 ft bed mattress. Luno cuts it for mid-size 6 ft boxes like the Tacoma long bed. It is not cut for a 5 ft bed. For a 5 ft bed, a sleep cut is not published by Luno.
