Lexus GX 550 Build Guide: Roof Racks, Bumpers and Camp Gear Compared (2024-2026)

The Lexus GX 550 shows up from the factory ready for a dirt road, which makes it easy to overbuy. Our advice is simple: buy parts that name the GX 550 and list your year, in an order that does not make you pay twice.

The short answer: start with a roof rack and a pair of recovery boards, add cold food and a camp kitchen, choose one front bumper and live with it, and add the rear bumper last. Below we compare the GX 550 roof racks we sell from Prinsu, DV8 and Front Runner, three bumpers from CBI and Rago, and the storage, recovery, fridge and kitchen gear that works with this truck. We use only published specs. Where a maker does not publish a number, we say "not published" instead of guessing. Everything that fits lives in our Lexus GX 550 collection.

GX 550 fit facts: years, trims, roof mounting and roof load

Fit is the whole game on a new truck, so here is what the makers say, in plain words.

GX 550 roof racks: Prinsu Pro vs DV8 Spec Series vs Front Runner Slimline II

All three racks bolt on and list the 2024 and newer GX 550. The DV8 and the Front Runner 3/4 kit are priced about the same, the Prinsu Pro sits a step above, and the full Front Runner kit is the most expensive. Price narrows it a little, but what you plan to carry up there is the real decision.

Which GX 550 roof rack should you buy?

Buy the Prinsu Pro if a rooftop tent is going up there. It is the only GX 550 rack here with a published load rating, and with a tent up top we would rather trust a number than a feeling. Take the Standard deflector unless a 40 inch light bar is already in the plan. If you cannot decide, this is the one.

Buy the DV8 Spec Series if you tinker. Nine T-slot crossbars, side slots along the full length and removable rear fins give you the most places to bolt things. DV8 does not publish a load rating. Its own page says to "refer to the owner's manual regarding the weight capacity of the vehicle's roof mounting points." Good advice for any rack.

Buy the Front Runner Slimline II if you want a camp table stored under the rack. Front Runner says the full-length GX 550 foot rails leave room for one under rack table at the rear, either the smaller Pro Stainless Steel Prep Table or the larger Pro Stainless Steel Camp Table. Take the full kit (85.3 inch tray) for the most deck and the table, or the 3/4 kit (53.5 inch tray) for a shorter, lighter rack. Front Runner does not list the table for the 3/4 kit.

Add-on: front lights for the DV8 rack

The DV8 Spec Series Roof Rack Light Mount bolts to the front of the DV8 rack and runs two 20 inch single-row bars, one 40 inch bar or ten 3 inch pods. DV8 says it fits only its Land Cruiser 250 and GX 550 rack, and lights are not included. Installing it with the rack takes about 30 minutes, per DV8; adding it later takes about an hour and a half.

Planning a rooftop tent?

Add up the tent, the rack and everything strapped to it, then hold it against the roof load in your owner's manual. Tent mounting differs by tent and rack, so confirm fit with us before ordering.

GX 550 bumpers: CBI vs Rago, front and rear

Three bumpers, two jobs. Pick your front bumper once, and save the rear for last.

The CBI GX550 Front Bumper is the lighter choice at 55 to 65 lb, with a published 8,000 to 12,000 lb winch range, a 30 inch light bar mount and no cutting to install. The Rago GX550 Winch Front Bumper hides the winch behind the face, adds two 10 inch side bars to its 30 inch center bar, and opens the wheel wells for bigger tires. Trimming and a riv-nut install are part of that job. The Rago GX550 Full-Width Rear Bumper raises the rear profile for departure angle and takes two Baja Designs S2 or Rigid SR-M lights. It needs trimming too.

Winch rating

Only CBI publishes a winch range for its GX 550 bumper. For the Rago, choose your winch first and confirm fit with us before ordering.

GX 550 recovery: boards and air before bigger steel

Even with GX 550 bumpers on the shelf, the first trail upgrade is still technique plus boards. A pair of ActionTrax Recovery Boards solves more first-year stuck moments than a winch you have not bought yet. They are made in the USA, the sawtooth ends clear sand and mud, and the teeth can be replaced in the field. They do not need vehicle fitment.

The ARB CKMA12 Onboard Air Compressor is what makes airing down worth it. ARB rates it at 100 PSI maximum with a 50% duty cycle. It mounts in the engine bay, behind a seat or another protected spot with a bracket that turns 180 degrees. ARB does not publish a GX 550 mounting location. Confirm fit with us before ordering.

A few habits that pay off every trip:

  • Lower tire pressure for the surface you are on, then air back up before highway speeds.
  • Use rated recovery points only. Never a hitch ball.
  • One spotter, clear hand signals, and nobody standing in line with a strap.

GX 550 storage: get gear off the cargo floor

The DV8 Rear Window Pocket MOLLE Panels turn the rear side windows into a place for a first aid kit, a radio, straps or a recovery rope, which leaves the cargo floor for the fridge and the bags. DV8 lists them for all 2024 and newer GX 550 trims. They are 3 mm steel, take M6 carriage bolts and MOLLE pouches, and need minor drilling with about an hour and a half to install.

Read this fit note twice: DV8 does not recommend these panels with third-row seating, because the side curtain airbags could be affected. If your GX 550 has a third row, skip them.

GX 550 power and cold food

The GX 550 cabin is comfortable enough that people underestimate food. Ice melts. A compressor fridge does not, as long as you give it power. The Dometic CFX5 45 is a sensible middle size for two people and a long weekend. Dometic lists about 46 liters, cooling down to -7 F, 12/24V DC and 100-240V AC power, and app control. It is 27.3 inches long including the handles and weighs about 46 lb empty, so measure your cargo floor with the second row where you keep it. Choose the cooler alone or with the protective cover.

For a fridge that rides along every weekend, the Dometic HWK-DC Hardwire Kit gives it a fused 12/24V outlet with Dometic's locking 2-pin plug instead of a loose lighter socket. It is a hardwire kit, so have a qualified installer wire it if vehicle electrics are not your thing.

A habit worth stealing from people who camp a lot: pre-chill the fridge at home the night before, on wall power. You leave with cold food and a battery that has not done any work yet.

If you chose the full-length Front Runner rack, the Front Runner Pro Stainless Steel Camp Table Kit is the one upgrade we would not skip. Front Runner lists it for the GX 550 full kit's foot rails. The table is 44.5 by 29.5 inches with a stainless top, stands 28.7 inches tall, and slides out from the side or the rear. Side mounting needs 5 open slats and rear mounting needs 7. Front Runner says rear mounting is not suitable for vehicles with a rear roof antenna, so plan on side access if yours has one.

Not running a Front Runner rack? The Chuck Box Camp Kitchen with Sink needs no vehicle fit. It is 24.5 by 18 by 19 inches and 19 lb empty, holds a two-burner stove up to 22 by 13 by 5.5 inches on top, and the lid lifts off to become a wash bin.

Sleeping in a GX 550

This section is short on purpose. Cabin camping in a GX 550 is real, but we do not carry a vehicle mattress with the GX 550 in its fitment yet, and we will not borrow a 4Runner or Land Cruiser pad and assume the wheel wells agree. For now, use a sleeping pad or cot on the folded cargo floor, or a rooftop tent once the rack and roof load math are settled. Not sure what fits? Confirm fit with us before ordering.

Choose your front bumper once. Buying one now and swapping later is the most expensive way to end up with the bumper you wanted in the first place.

What to skip on a GX 550

  • GX 460 or GX 470 parts. Same badge, different truck. More on that in the FAQ below.
  • Land Cruiser 250 parts that do not list the GX 550. The DV8 rack, light mount and MOLLE panels list both. Plenty of other parts do not.
  • A light bar cutout with no light bar. On the Prinsu Pro, take the Standard deflector unless a bar is coming.
  • A roller fairlead on the CBI bumper. CBI says it is not compatible. Plan on a hawse fairlead.
  • The DV8 MOLLE panels with a third row. DV8 does not recommend them with third-row seating.
  • A "close enough" mattress. Until one lists the GX 550, use a pad or cot.

Do GX 460 or GX 470 parts fit the GX 550?

No. It is a different generation with different mounts. Every product in this guide lists the 2024 and newer GX 550, and the makers keep GX 460 parts separate. Prinsu and Front Runner each make a different rack for the older truck, and Rago lists its GX 550 bumpers for 2024 to 2026 only. If a part does not list the GX 550, confirm fit with us before ordering.

Which roof racks fit the GX 550?

Three we carry list the 2024 and newer GX 550: the Prinsu Pro Lexus GX550 roof rack, the DV8 Spec Series roof rack for the Land Cruiser 250 and GX 550, and the Front Runner Slimline II in full or 3/4 length. All three bolt on, and Prinsu and Front Runner say no drilling is needed.

Can I keep using my sunroof with a GX 550 roof rack?

With the DV8 Spec Series, yes. DV8 says its rack retains the factory sunroof and antenna. Prinsu and Front Runner do not publish sunroof clearance for their GX 550 racks, so confirm fit with us before ordering.

How much weight can I carry on a GX 550 roof?

Use the roof load figure in your Lexus owner's manual. None of the rack makers publish it for the GX 550. Prinsu and DV8 point you to the owner's manual, and Front Runner does not publish a load rating for its GX 550 kits. Prinsu rates its rack at 700 lb dynamic and 1,200 lb static, but says the rack is limited by the weight capacity of the vehicle. Subtract the rack's own weight and carry the rest.

Will an aftermarket bumper affect my sensors or airbags?

Rago says its winch front bumper retains the Lexus Safety System, the parking sensors and the drive assist features, and its rear bumper keeps the parking and blind spot sensors. CBI says its front bumper retains the factory sensors. No maker here publishes airbag compatibility, so if that matters, confirm fit with us before ordering.

What winch fits the CBI GX550 front bumper?

CBI lists a gusseted mount for 8,000 to 12,000 lb winches and says the bumper is not compatible with roller-style fairleads, so plan on a hawse fairlead.

Is there a mattress made for the GX 550?

Not yet. We do not carry a vehicle mattress with the GX 550 in its fitment. Use a sleeping pad or cot on the folded cargo floor, and if you are not sure what fits, confirm fit with us before ordering.

How does freight shipping work for racks and bumpers?

Large, heavy items like rooftop tents, bumpers and bed racks have to ship by truck freight, which costs a lot more than a regular parcel. These items carry a flat freight charge to cover part of that cost. You will see it at checkout before you pay. Liftgate delivery is available on request. Confirm with us before ordering. Items that ship by truck freight are not part of our free shipping offer. Front Runner roof racks ship free by ground to the Lower 48.

Can I return a rack or bumper?

You have up to 30 days from delivery to return an item. Every return needs a return authorization number (RMA) first. Email hello@gearlanders.com to get one. Our mistake (the item is defective, arrived damaged, we sent the wrong item, or our product page listed your vehicle and it did not fit): we send you a return label, we pay the return shipping, and there is no restocking fee. Any other reason (a normal return): you ship the item back with your own tracked label and pay the return shipping, plus a 5% restocking fee (5% of the product cost). If our product page lists your vehicle and the part does not fit, we cover the return, freight included, even after you sign the delivery receipt (bill of lading).
