Truck bed bike racks: how to choose
If you drive a pickup, a truck bed bike rack holds the bikes upright inside the bed, so the tailgate stays closed and the hitch stays free for a trailer. Hitch racks and roof racks fit cars, SUVs and vans, or trucks that need the bed for other gear.
Why a bed rack instead of a tailgate pad
- Bikes ride inside the bed, not over the tailgate, so nothing rests on the tailgate or its paint and the tailgate still opens and closes.
- Each bike is held on its own: by the front wheel in a tray on the Big Days Chase Rack, or by the fork on the Swagman Patrol.
- The hitch stays free and, per Big Days, the backup camera stays clear with about 40 cubic feet of bed space open under the bikes.
- The Chase Rack fits beds from 4 ft 10 in to 8 ft, and five mountain bikes is the ideal load on many trucks.
Capacity and fit
The Big Days Chase Rack carries 1 to 5 bikes, and Big Days rates the rack for up to 900 lb static. The Chase Rack Pro 5 Bike is sized for mid-size trucks, and the 3 bike plus 1 moto and 2 bike plus 2 moto builds mix mountain bikes and dirt bikes. Big Days lists fit for pickups with 40 to 64 in of inside bed width. It mounts with a no-drill bed clamp, a Deck Rail clamp on trucks like the Tacoma and Tundra, a tonneau setup that depends on your cover, or a bolt-on install that drills four 3/8 in holes. The Swagman Patrol is a 2-bike fork mount bed rack, and the Impakt fork mount adds a bike.
Mountain bikes and e-bikes
The Big Days bike and e-bike tray takes 20 to 29 in wheels with tires up to 4 in wide. Big Days publishes the rack rating, not a per-bike weight limit, so ask us about heavy e-bikes. For hitch racks, check each product page for the per-bike weight limit and receiver size, and add a ramp for e-bikes: the E-Spec Pro and Current Pro are built for e-bikes and fat tires.
Hitch and roof racks
