Toyota 4Runner Car Camping Setup: Year-Fit Mattress, Hatch Screen, What to Skip
A 4Runner cargo well is a real sleep platform if the mattress matches the generation and you do not still have a third row in the way. We sell year-fit AIR Pro on one product page, and a separate AIR+FOAM Pro cut for 4Runner (no third row) plus Defender 110 (2020+). This guide is that sleep setup, plus the hatch-window screen that is specific to this vehicle. It is not a dirt-bike haul guide.
Sleep: pick the right 4Runner mattress
Start on the Toyota 4Runner AIR Pro mattress and choose the option that matches your truck. Do not guess across generations. Driving a 2025 or newer 4Runner? Luno says its mattresses are compatible with the 6th Gen, but "these models include a drop in the rear cargo area, so a sleeping platform is required to create a flat, comfortable surface beneath your mattress." Luno also notes that gas and hybrid 2025 4Runners need different platform sizes. Plan for a platform, and confirm with us before ordering so the mattress matches your truck. If you want foam between the air layers (self-inflating, R-value 11), use the AIR+FOAM Pro 4Runner / Defender mattress. That cut is for a 4Runner without a third row, plus Land Rover Defender 110 (2020+). A 4Runner that still has third-row seats is a different platform (full-size SUV), not this mattress.
We do not sell an AIR Base 4Runner mattress. The two live options are AIR Pro and AIR+FOAM Pro.
Luno says Head Support Bridge attachments are not included with some 4Runner models. If you are counting on them to fill the seat-to-floor gap, confirm with us before ordering.
On a 5th Gen without a third row, pair either mattress with the 4Runner / Defender fitted sheet, not the compact/mid sheet. The AIR Pro option for the 6th Gen or a third-row 5th Gen is the Full-Size SUV cut, so it takes the Full-Size SUV fitted sheet.
Airflow: the hatch glass is the 4Runner move
A 4Runner hatch has a glass window independent of the door. The Luno 4Runner trunk window screen is cut for that 2010+ (5th-gen) glass so you can sleep with the hatch window open. It is not the generic two-pack side-window screens.
Side vehicle window screens are still useful on the rear doors. The Luno car camping fan is optional overnight circulation.
Storage
Keep bags off the mattress. On a pre-2025 4Runner with front and rear grab handles plus trunk anchors, the Luno cargo hammock puts small overnight items overhead. It is not compatible with 6th Gen (2025+) 4Runner models, so skip it on a newer truck. Tools and recovery gear stay in the front or in a drawer. This is a sleep setup, not a chase-rack install.
The 5-minute setup
- Confirm your year (and that a third row is not in the way if you bought AIR+FOAM Pro).
- Fold the rear seats, clear the cargo well, lay the mattress and inflate it. AIR Pro uses its included 12V pump; AIR+FOAM Pro self-inflates, then you top it off with the AirRoll Bag.
- Fit the trunk window screen on the hatch glass if you are sleeping with that window open (2010+).
- Add side screens if you want them, plus the cargo hammock on a pre-2025 truck.
What to skip
- The wrong year. 5th Gen and 6th Gen 4Runners are different options on the mattress product page, and a 6th Gen also needs a sleeping platform under the mattress. Gear for the 2003-2009 truck is in the 4th Gen 4Runner collection. There is no 1996-2002 variant.
- AIR+FOAM Pro on a third-row 4Runner. That mattress is for a 4Runner with no third row (or Defender 110 2020+).
- Generic inflatables and compact/mid cuts. This cargo well is not a Crosstrek.
- Moto or chase-rack posts. Those are a different job. Stay on the 4Runner sleep product pages.
