Hard Shell vs. Soft Shell

Rooftop tents come in two configurations and the choice matters more than most buyers expect. Soft shells fold out from a hinged base, pack flat on your roof bars, and are the lighter, more affordable option. Hard shells are built from aluminum and pop open in under a minute. They hold their shape through cold and wet weather, drain better, and add less wind resistance on the highway when closed. The trade-off is added weight and a higher stack height on your roof.

What We Carry

We stock Freespirit Recreation (FSR) across most of the lineup because their build quality holds up on rough roads and their warranty is straightforward. The Aspen Lite is the entry point for soft shell buyers who want a quality tent without paying for features they won't use. The Odyssey steps up with more interior room and additional windows. For hard shell, the Evolution v2 and Alpine FiftyOne/SixtyOne are FSR's aluminum-shell options, built for overlanders who camp in all seasons. Tuff Stuff's Stealth rounds out the 3-person hardshell side at the top of the range.

Sizing and Fitment

The 49" footprint works on narrower platforms like a Subaru Outback, Forester, or compact crossover. The 55" and king-size options fit mid-size trucks and full-size SUVs better. Before ordering, check the dynamic load rating on your crossbar system. That number needs to cover the tent's packed weight plus the weight of whoever is sleeping in it, not just one or the other.

Ground-Level Options

If you want more floor space at camp without the rooftop setup, we also carry the FSR Foundation Series HUB Tent and the Car Connect system. The Car Connect attaches the HUB directly to your vehicle's hatch, which adds privacy and keeps the inside of your car accessible from the tent. Worth considering if you're car camping rather than overlanding.
