Hard Shell vs Soft Shell

Rooftop tents come in two setups, and the choice matters more than most buyers expect. Soft shells fold out from a hinged base, pack flatter on your roof bars, and usually cost less. Hard shells use an aluminum lid, open fast, shed weather better, and sit cleaner on the highway when closed. The trade-off is more packed weight and a taller stack on the roof.

Sizing and Fitment

Narrower platforms like a Subaru Outback, Forester, or compact crossover often suit a smaller footprint such as Nova or Aspen Lite. Mid-size trucks and full-size SUVs take Nova King, Kali, Aspen Pro XL, Evolution XL, Alpine, and Alpha shells more comfortably. Before you order, confirm the dynamic load rating on your crossbar system. That rating needs to cover the tent's packed weight plus the people sleeping in it.

If you want more floor space at camp without a second rooftop shell, Hub 4XL and Hub 4 Double are the live ground tents on this grid.
