Jeep Wrangler JK vs JL: What Actually Changed

The JK is the Jeep Wrangler built for the 2007 to 2018 model years. The JL replaced it as a 2018 model and is the current Wrangler, so 2018 is the one year when both were sold new. Knowing which one you have matters most when you buy parts, because most bumpers, fenders, doors, and sliders are built for one generation only.
How to tell a JK from a JL
Walk around the front of the Jeep and check these in order:
- Grille and headlights. On a JL, the two outer grille slots cut into the headlights. Jeep designed it that way as a nod to the old CJ. On a JK, each headlight sits inside its own round opening, separate from the slots.
- Front turn signals. A JL has LED turn signals mounted on the front of the fender flares. On a JK, the turn signals sit in the grille below the headlights.
- Windshield bolts. A JL windshield folds down with four bolts across the top of the frame, and a header bar stays attached to the A-pillars so the rearview mirror stays put.
- Door hinges. Jeep stamps the Torx bit size directly on the JL's door hinges, so you know which tool removes the doors.
- Ignition. Most JLs start with a push button. JKs start with a key.

For 2012, Jeep replaced the JK's 3.8L V6 and four-speed automatic with the 3.6L Pentastar V6 (285 hp, 260 lb-ft) and a five-speed automatic. At its 2018 launch, the JL offered the same 3.6L V6 with a new six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic, plus a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 270 hp and 295 lb-ft that comes only with the eight-speed automatic.
What else changed with the JL
- Lighter materials. Jeep moved the JL's doors, door hinges, hood, fender flares, and windshield frame to aluminum, and the swing gate to magnesium.
- Full-time 4x4 option. The JL Sahara offered the Selec-Trac full-time two-speed transfer case, a first for the Wrangler.
- Rubicon gearing. The JL Rubicon's Rock-Trac system uses a 4:1 low range with Dana 44 axles, Tru-Lok lockers, and an electronic sway bar disconnect. Jeep rates its crawl ratio at 84.2:1 with the manual and 77.2:1 with the automatic.
- Water fording. Jeep rates the JL for up to 30 inches of water fording.
- Cabin tech. Uconnect touchscreens in 5.0, 7.0, or 8.4 inch sizes, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Which parts fit both generations
Most armor and body parts are generation-specific. A few pieces cross over:
- Fit both JK and JL: the Jeep Wrangler JL and JK Hardtop Roof Rack (with the bracket kit for your generation), the Interior Cargo Rack for four-door models from 2007 to 2024, the Jeep Door Storage Bar, and the spare-mounted 3rd Brake Light.
- JK only: the Jeep JK Mid-Stubby Front Winch Bumper, built for 2007 to 2018.
- JL and Gladiator JT: front bumpers like the DV8 Offroad Spec Series Winch Front Bumper, the front fenders, and the trail doors, because the Gladiator shares the JL's front end.
