Best Truck Bed Dirt Bike Rack: 4 Systems Compared

Blue pickup truck carrying two dirt bikes upright on a Big Days Chase Rack 2 Moto

The best truck bed dirt bike rack for most riders is one that holds two bikes upright with the tailgate closed and leaves the bed floor open for gear. For that job we pick the Big Days Chase Rack Essential 2 Moto. For three bikes, the Chase Rack Baja 1000 Pro 3 Moto adds a third mount and the offset adapters that keep the handlebars apart.

The short answer: the Chase Rack lifts the bikes off the bed floor on a rack that clamps to the bed rails, so you keep about 40 cubic feet of space underneath and a closed tailgate on beds 4'10" and longer, per Big Days. Risk Racing's Lock-N-Load Pro, the CCR Bed Buddy and the Black Widow tie-down rack are simpler floor or bulkhead systems, and each one fits a different kind of rider. We compare all of them on bikes carried, bed fit, install, how the wheel is held, weight and tailgate use. Every spec comes from the maker's own page. Where a maker gives no number, we say "not listed".

Big Days Chase Rack: 2 Moto and 3 Moto

The Chase Rack System is made in Utah by Big Days. A rail-mounted rack with risers and crossbars carries moto mounts on T-track, so the bikes sit upright above the bed instead of on the floor. Big Days says the space underneath holds about 40 cubic feet of gear, and the hitch stays free for towing.

Lead time: Built to order in Utah. Plan on 5 to 10 business days to build, then 3 to 5 days in transit.

Fit check before you order

Big Days lists these as not compatible: any RAM with RamBox, the 2006 to 2014 Honda Ridgeline, Tesla Cybertruck, Hyundai Santa Cruz, Chevy Avalanche, GMC Hummer EV, and GMC Sierra with the CarbonPro bed. The 2017 and newer Ridgeline and the Rivian R1T do not work with the standard clamp-on setup. Trucks with Deck Rail need the Deck Rail clamp.

What the table does not show

The Chase Rack is the only one here that lifts the bikes off the bed floor, which is where the open space underneath comes from. The other three keep the bikes on the floor and use the bed itself as the platform, so they weigh much less and take up less of the truck when the bikes are out. Risk Racing's system is the only strapless one. The Bed Buddy and the Black Widow rack still need tie-down straps, and so does the Chase Rack.

Risk Racing Lock-N-Load Pro

The Lock-N-Load Pro is a strapless transport stand. Its jaws lock down onto the footpegs and hold the suspension partly compressed, so there is no wheel chock and no straps. Risk Racing rates the standard Pro for 85cc to 450cc MX bikes up to 270 lb, and it also makes a Mini for small bikes and an HD for heavier trail and enduro bikes. Each unit holds one bike and mounts to a low plate that bolts through the floor of a truck, trailer or van. The arms come off for storage.

It suits riders who move MX bikes between a truck, a trailer and a van and want the same strapless hold in each. Before drilling, Risk Racing says to look under the bed for the fuel tank, fuel and brake lines, wiring and the spare tire winch.

CCR Bed Buddy

CCR Sport has made the Bed Buddy since 1997. It is a steel rack that bolts to the front bulkhead of the bed, with tapered slots that guide the front tire and tie-down loops set for clean strap angles. CCR says it can carry up to three bikes depending on rack width and configuration, and the PRO System adds an offset wheel chock so the center bike's handlebars clear. It is sized by the width at the bulkhead, so measure before you order. CCR lists a 30 to 45 minute install with basic hand tools and a drill for the through-bolt method.

Black Widow Motorcycle Tie-Down Rack

Black Widow's pickup tie-down rack is a powder-coated steel bar, 10 lb, that adjusts from 54 to 73 in wide. It has two wheel chocks and three tie-down points for two bikes side by side, and Black Widow sells a center extension that offsets the handlebars for a third bike. It is the lightest and simplest system here. Black Widow does not list bed length, tailgate use or the mounting method on the product page.

Which truck bed dirt bike rack should you buy?

  • You haul two bikes and want the bed for gear: the Chase Rack Essential 2 Moto. In a bed under 5'5", add the Moto Offset Kit.
  • You haul three bikes: the Chase Rack Baja 1000 Pro 3 Moto. It includes 2 adapters; a bed under 5'5" needs a third.
  • You move bikes between a trailer, van and truck and hate straps: Risk Racing's Lock-N-Load Pro, one unit per bike.
  • You want a fixed wheel chock and do not need the bed space: the CCR Bed Buddy or the Black Widow tie-down rack.

Short beds and the Moto Offset rule

Big Days Moto Offset adapter bolted to the Chase Rack T-track under a moto mount

Offset adapters move the outside moto mounts toward the cab so the handlebars clear each other, and in short beds they help the tailgate close. Big Days publishes the rule on its Moto Offset Adapter page: "For 3 Dirtbikes: We recommend 2 for beds over 5'5", and 3 for beds under 5'5"." and "For 2 Dirtbikes: We recommend 0 for beds over 5'5", and 2 for beds under 5'5"."

Our Big Days Moto Offset Kit includes 2 adapters. The Chase Rack 2 Moto ships without adapters, and the Baja 1000 Pro 3 Moto includes the kit. For 3 bikes in a bed under 5'5", you need a third adapter, so message us before you order.

Bikes Bed over 5'5" Bed under 5'5"
2 dirt bikes 0 adapters 2 adapters (1 Moto Offset Kit)
3 dirt bikes 2 adapters (1 Moto Offset Kit) 3 adapters (1 kit plus 1 more)

FAQ

What is the best truck bed dirt bike rack?

For two dirt bikes with the tailgate closed and the bed floor left open for gear, we pick the Big Days Chase Rack Essential 2 Moto. For three bikes, the Chase Rack Baja 1000 Pro 3 Moto adds a third mount and the Moto Offset Kit. If you want a strapless hold on a trailer or van floor, Risk Racing's Lock-N-Load Pro is built for that. If you want a simple bolt-in wheel chock and you are fine strapping bikes down on the bed floor, look at the CCR Bed Buddy or the Black Widow tie-down rack.

How many Moto Offset adapters do I need?

Big Days gives the rule on its Moto Offset Adapter page: "For 3 Dirtbikes: We recommend 2 for beds over 5'5", and 3 for beds under 5'5"." and "For 2 Dirtbikes: We recommend 0 for beds over 5'5", and 2 for beds under 5'5"." Our Big Days Moto Offset Kit includes 2 adapters. That covers 2 bikes in a bed under 5'5" and 3 bikes in a bed over 5'5". Three bikes in a bed under 5'5" take a third adapter, so message us before you order.

Does the Chase Rack 3 Moto include the offset adapters?

Yes. The Baja 1000 Pro 3 Moto build includes the Moto Offset Kit (2 adapters), per Big Days. That matches Big Days' rule for 3 bikes in beds over 5'5". In a bed under 5'5", Big Days recommends 3 adapters, so you need one more. Message us and we will sort out the third adapter.

Can I close the tailgate with dirt bikes on the Chase Rack?

Big Days lists closed-tailgate fit for beds 4'10" and longer. In beds under 5 ft, Big Days says the rear tire may need to shift toward the center of the bed for the tailgate to close, and on some short beds it suggests a 1 to 2 inch block under the rear tire. In short beds, the offset adapters move the bikes about 3 to 4 inches forward, per Big Days.

Do I have to drill my truck bed?

It depends on the rack. The Big Days Chase Rack clamps to the bed rails as standard, and only the optional bolt-on mount drills four 3/8 in holes in the top of the rails. Risk Racing's install instructions drill four holes through the bed floor for the Lock-N-Load mounting plate. CCR lists a drill for its through-bolt install of the Bed Buddy, and its FAQ says some trucks can use factory mounting points or backing plates instead. Black Widow includes mounting hardware but does not list the mounting method on its product page.

Will the Chase Rack work with my tonneau cover?

Big Days says it works with T-track tonneau covers (adapter sold separately) or covers that leave at least 2 in of bed rail exposed. Folding and retractable covers work well, tri-fold covers cannot fold all the way, and solid one-piece covers do not work. Tonneau setups use the bolt-on mount and skip the lower crossbar. If you are not sure, confirm fit with us before ordering.

Which trucks does the Chase Rack not fit?

Per Big Days: any RAM with RamBox, the 2006 to 2014 Honda Ridgeline, Tesla Cybertruck, Hyundai Santa Cruz, Chevy Avalanche, GMC Hummer EV, and GMC Sierra with the CarbonPro bed. The 2017 and newer Honda Ridgeline and the Rivian R1T do not work with the standard clamp-on setup. The Ford Maverick uses Big Days' Maverick-specific setup.
