Best 4Runner Roof Rack: 10 Racks Compared for 5th and 6th Gen
The best 4Runner roof rack starts with which 4Runner you drive. Every rack below is built for one generation: the 2010 to 2024 5th Gen or the 2025 and newer 6th Gen.
We carry ten 4Runner roof racks from Prinsu, Front Runner, Rago, DV8 and BajaRack. This guide compares them on the numbers each maker publishes: weight, load rating, light bar options, mounting and price. Where a maker does not publish a number, we say so instead of guessing.

6th Gen 4Runner roof racks (2025 and newer)
Prinsu Pro 4Runner Roof Rack 2025-2027: $1,399

Prinsu built a new crossbar for the 6th Gen that it says is 44% stronger than its previous generation, with six drop-in points per crossbar for awnings, light bars, traction boards and boxes. Prinsu lists fitment for all 2025 and newer 4Runner trims, including SR5, TRD Off-Road and Limited.
Why pick it
- 700 lb dynamic and 1,200 lb static, per Prinsu
- No-drill, bolt-on install with stainless steel hardware
- Prinsu says most installs take 2 to 3 hours with standard tools
- Standard or Light Bar Cutout wind deflector at the same price
Trade-offs
- Prinsu does not publish the weight of the 6th Gen rack
- Prinsu says the sunroof stays usable depending on your accessory setup, so plan tall loads around it
- $350 more than the Front Runner Slimsport
DV8 Spec Series 4Runner Roof Rack: $1,299.99

DV8 uses ten 80/20 T-slot crossbars that take M6 T-nuts, plus slots along the top, rear and the full length of both side walls. DV8 calls it the lowest profile rack for the 6th Gen, and it does not touch the body panels, so it needs no rubber trim.
Why pick it
- Ten T-slot crossbars and full length side slots for scene lights and tie downs
- Holds up to a 40 inch light bar on the rear crossbar
- Outside facing bolts: build and load the rack on the ground, then lift it onto the mounting feet
- DV8 says sunroof models work with no changes
Trade-offs
- DV8 publishes no load rating and points you to your owner's manual for the roof mounting points
- No published weight
- The front light cutout fairing is sold separately
- DV8 estimates 4 to 6 hours to install
Rago 4Runner Roof Rack: $1,198.98 or $1,298.98 with Light Pocket

Both Rago racks use eight aluminum crossmembers and double walled side panels, and mount to several factory attachment points so they do not rattle. The standard version has a solid front fairing; the Light Pocket version swaps it for a pocket that holds a 40 inch light bar or ten 3 inch pods. Rago makes both in the USA.
Why pick it
- Works with the factory sunroof and, per Rago, does not interfere with antenna or satellite reception
- Solid fairing version takes the Rago RIGID mount for six 6 inch round lights, sold separately
- Up to seven pairs of Rago decking panels fit on top
- Light Pocket version weighs about 76 lb, per our product page
Trade-offs
- Rago does not publish a load rating
- No published weight for the solid fairing version
- Rago asks you to re-tighten the mounting bolts after 100 miles and periodically after that
Front Runner Slimsport: $1,049 or $1,049 Light Bar Ready

The Slimsport is a low, flat deck with an 88 by 48 inch load area. Front Runner says it sits 2.4 to 2.8 inches above the highest point of the roof. The Light Bar Ready kit adds a 40 inch light bar wind fairing with a cutout, at the same price.
Why pick it
- Lowest price of the 6th Gen racks here
- 8 mm T-slots fit Front Runner top mount accessories
- No drilling, per Front Runner
- Light Bar Ready version includes the 40 inch fairing
Trade-offs
- 81.6 lb, per Front Runner
- Under rack tables and some side mounts, such as the Hi-Lift jack bracket, do not fit the Slimsport
- No load rating on the kit page
- The light bar is sold separately
Front Runner Slimline II: $1,799 or $1,299 for 3/4 length

The Slimline II kit pairs a tray with vehicle specific foot rails that mount to the factory points with no drilling. The full tray is 2166 mm (85.3 in) long; the 3/4 tray is 1560 mm (61.4 in) and leaves part of the roof clear. Front Runner offers more than 55 Slimline II accessories.
Why pick it
- Foot rails have an opening for one Front Runner under rack table
- Full length or 3/4 length to match how much roof you want covered
- Factory mounting points, no drilling
Trade-offs
- Full kit is 90.4 lb and the 3/4 kit is 70.6 lb, per Front Runner
- The full kit is the highest priced 6th Gen rack here at $1,799
- No load rating on the kit page
5th Gen 4Runner roof racks (2010 to 2024)
Prinsu Pro 4Runner Full Roof Rack 2010-2024: $1,399

Prinsu lists the 5th Gen Pro at 70 lb with ten 47 inch crossbars, about 3.5 inches of added height and a 700 lb dynamic, 1,200 lb static rating. Prinsu lists fitment for all 2010 to 2024 trims, including SR5, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Limited.
Why pick it
- Published weight and load rating
- No-drill, bolt-on install
- Standard or 40 inch light bar cutout wind deflector at the same price
Trade-offs
- Prinsu notes that capacity changes with the number of crossbars and their layout
- A flat platform has no basket sides, so loose gear needs straps or boxes
BajaRack 5th Gen 4Runner Standard Basket: $1,675

The BajaRack Standard Basket is cold rolled steel tubing with an epoxy primer and black powder coat. It bolts to the four factory roof points with no drilling, and a floor cutout clears the factory antenna while the sunroof still works.
Why pick it
- Basket sides keep fuel, duffels and recovery boards contained
- 16.80 sq ft of cargo area
- Aluminum wind deflector and stainless steel hardware included
Trade-offs
- No published load rating or weight
- Adds 7.75 inches of total height from the roof, about twice the Prinsu Pro
How to choose a 4Runner roof rack
- Start with the year. 2010 to 2024 is the 5th Gen; 2025 and newer is the 6th Gen. The racks in this guide fit one generation each.
- Size the load. If a rooftop tent is the plan, start with a rack that publishes a load rating, then check the roof rating in your owner's manual. The lower number is the one that counts while driving.
- Decide on lights first. A light pocket or cutout fairing is cleaner than adding a bracket later. Rago, Front Runner and Prinsu all offer one.
- Think about what goes under the rack. Want a slide out table? Choose the Slimline II. The Slimsport does not take one.
- Check your garage. The Slimsport adds 2.4 to 2.8 inches, the 5th Gen Prinsu Pro about 3.5 inches and the BajaRack basket 7.75 inches, before anything goes on top.
- Plan the install. All ten are bolt-on. Prinsu, Front Runner and BajaRack also state no drilling. Prinsu estimates 2 to 3 hours and DV8 4 to 6 hours.

4Runner roof rack FAQ
Which 6th Gen 4Runner roof racks have a spot for a 40 inch light bar?
Two have one built in up front. The Rago 4Runner Roof Rack with Light Pocket has a front pocket for a 40 inch bar or ten 3 inch pods, and the Front Runner Slimsport Roof Rack Kit, Light Bar Ready includes a 40 inch fairing with a cutout. The Prinsu Pro 4Runner Roof Rack 2025-2027 also comes with a Light Bar Cutout wind deflector at the same price. The DV8 Spec Series 4Runner Roof Rack takes a 40 inch bar on its rear crossbar, and DV8 sells a front light cutout fairing separately. The light bars themselves are sold separately for all of them.
What do dynamic and static load ratings mean on a roof rack?
Dynamic is what the rack can carry while you drive. Static is what it can hold while parked, which matters when people sleep in a rooftop tent on the roof. Prinsu rates both Prinsu Pro 4Runner racks at 700 lb dynamic and 1,200 lb static. On its 5th Gen page, Prinsu adds that capacity depends on how many crossbars you run and is limited by what your vehicle can carry. Check the roof rating in your 4Runner owner's manual too; the lower number is the one that counts on the road.
Can I keep a camp table under a 4Runner roof rack?
Yes, with the Front Runner Slimline II Roof Rack Kit or the Front Runner Slimline II 3/4 Roof Rack Kit. Front Runner builds an opening into the foot rails for one under rack table, either the smaller prep table or the larger camp table, sold separately. The Front Runner Slimsport does not work with under rack tables.
Which 4Runner roof racks are the lightest?
Of the racks that publish a weight, the 5th Gen Prinsu Pro and the Front Runner Slimline II 3/4 are the lightest, both about 70 lb. Prinsu lists its 5th Gen Prinsu Pro at 70 lb. Front Runner lists the Slimline II 3/4 at 70.6 lb, the Slimsport at 81.6 lb and the full Slimline II at 90.4 lb. Our product page lists the Rago with Light Pocket at about 76 lb. Prinsu (6th Gen), DV8, the solid fairing Rago and BajaRack do not publish a weight.
How long does it take to install a 4Runner roof rack?
Prinsu says most Prinsu Pro installs take 2 to 3 hours with standard tools. DV8 estimates 4 to 6 hours for the Spec Series, about 3 hours of that for assembly, and its outside facing bolts let you build and load the rack on the ground, then lift it onto the mounting feet. Rago asks you to check and re-tighten the mounting bolts after 100 miles. Every rack in this guide is a bolt-on install.
Should I pick a steel basket or an aluminum platform for my 4Runner?
The BajaRack 5th Gen 4Runner Standard Basket is cold rolled steel with basket sides that keep loose gear contained, and it adds 7.75 inches of height from the roof. The Prinsu Pro 4Runner Full Roof Rack 2010-2024 is an aluminum platform that weighs 70 lb, adds about 3.5 inches and carries a published 700 lb dynamic rating. Pick the basket for duffels, fuel and recovery boards you want corralled; pick the platform for a rooftop tent or a lower roofline.
