Baja Rack standard steel basket roof rack on a 5th Gen 4Runner

5th Gen 4Runner Roof Rack Guide (2010 to 2024)

Loading an inflatable boat onto a Prinsu Pro roof rack on a green 5th Gen 4Runner

A roof rack on a 2010 to 2024 Toyota 4Runner carries what does not fit inside: recovery boards, fuel or water cans, a storage box, or a rooftop tent. We carry two racks built for this generation, plus a rooftop tent that mounts on top of a rated rack. This guide compares them using only what their product pages list.

Have a 2025 or newer 4Runner? That is a different roof, and it takes a different rack: the Prinsu Pro 4Runner Roof Rack 2025-2026.

How to choose a 5th Gen 4Runner roof rack

Check your year

Both racks list the 2010 to 2024 4Runner only. The Prinsu page says plainly that the 2025 and 2026 4Runner uses a different Prinsu Pro rack.

Platform or basket

The Prinsu Pro is a flat platform in powder-coated aluminum. Each crossbar has 6 drop-in points, and Prinsu lists a two-part side rail with recessed mounting feet. A platform suits a build you add to over time: boards on one side, a box or an awning mount on the other.

The Baja Rack Standard Basket is cold-rolled steel with a black powder coat. The basket rails hold loose items in, and the floor gives you 16.80 sq ft of cargo area. It weighs 65 lb, and an aluminum wind deflector comes with it.

Load ratings and rooftop tents

Baja rates its basket at 300 lb dynamic (while driving) and 600 lb static (parked at camp). The Alpine FiftyOne tent weighs 248 lb. The Prinsu product page does not list a load rating, so confirm the number with Prinsu before you put a tent on it.

The tent's brackets fit crossbars up to 3.25 in wide, and its mounting rails sit 31.5 in apart. Check that against your rack before you order, and plan on two people for the install.

Count the people too

Tuff Stuff asks you to confirm that the vehicle roof and the rack are rated for the tent plus the people inside it. Do that math with your 4Runner's own roof rating, not only the rack's.

Sunroof, antenna and height

Baja says its basket keeps the sunroof fully working and has a cutout in the floor to clear the factory roof antenna. At 5 in tall, it adds 7.75 in of total height above the roof. The Prinsu page does not mention the sunroof either way, so if your 4Runner has one, ask before you order.

Light bars

Prinsu offers two wind deflectors at the same price: a Standard solid face, or a cutout for a 40 in light bar. Pick the cutout only if you plan to run a light bar through the deflector. Baja lists light bar brackets as one of the add-ons its basket can take.

Install

Both racks are no-drill. Baja mounts to the four factory roof points with stainless hardware. Prinsu lists a no-drill bolt-on install with stainless hardware. Lead time and freight are on each product page, so check them before you plan a trip around the install.

Limited stock

The Baja product page says these are the last 5th Gen units it can get. The rack-only version is available. The rack plus ladder version is sold out.

FAQ

Will a 5th Gen 4Runner roof rack fit my 2025 4Runner?

No. Both racks here are for 2010 to 2024. The 2025 and 2026 4Runner uses the Prinsu Pro 4Runner Roof Rack 2025-2026, linked at the top of this guide.

Can I run a 4Runner roof rack with a sunroof?

Baja says its Standard Basket keeps the sunroof fully working. The Prinsu page does not say either way, so ask before you order.

Can a 4Runner roof rack hold a rooftop tent?

The Baja basket is rated 300 lb while driving and 600 lb parked. The Alpine FiftyOne weighs 248 lb, and Tuff Stuff asks you to count the people inside too. Prinsu does not list a load rating on its page, so confirm with Prinsu first.

Do I have to drill my roof?

No. Both racks are listed as no-drill. The Baja rack uses the four factory roof points.

Do you still carry the Baja Utility, Flat or TRD Pro 4Runner racks?

No. Those older Baja 4Runner versions are gone. The Standard Basket is the last Baja 5th Gen rack we have, and the Prinsu Pro is the other 5th Gen option.
