Luno AIR Pro S1 air mattress set up in the back of a Subaru Crosstrek with the rear hatch open

How to Choose a Car Camping Mattress for Your SUV

A car camping mattress only works if it fits the flat floor you actually have. So the order matters. Fold the rear seats, find your vehicle on Luno's fit list, measure the floor so you know what you are working with, and only then decide between air and air plus foam. This guide walks through that order and finishes with how to keep the bed warm when nights get cold.

If you already know your vehicle, check the fit lists on the three Luno product pages linked below. If your model is not listed, measure the floor using the steps below, then confirm fit with us before ordering so we can check it against Luno's sizes.

Measure the cargo floor first

Fold the rear seats as flat as they go and clear out loose gear. Then take two measurements:

  • Length: from the back of the front seats to the closed hatch.
  • Width: the narrowest point between the wheel wells or any trim that sticks in.

Write both numbers down. You want a mattress that sits inside that rectangle without buckling against plastic or riding up the wheel wells.

The three mattresses in this guide come in two footprints. Luno's Compact/Mid size (S1 air, P1 air plus foam) inflates to 74 x 50.75 inches, 4 inches thick. The full-size P2 inflates to 80 x 53 inches, also 4 inches thick.

Measure first

Luno's own rule on the product pages is simple: if your floor measures short of a size in either direction, that size is not the one. Measuring rules a size out, but it does not confirm a fit on its own. If your vehicle is not on a Luno fit list, or your numbers are close, confirm fit with us before ordering.

What throws the numbers off

  • Some SUVs leave a step or a gap where the seats fold. Measure with the seats exactly how you will sleep on them.
  • A raised load floor, a spare tire hump, or a cargo cover track can steal an inch.
  • If you sleep on a platform, measure on top of the platform, not the bare carpet.

All three mattresses come with two Head Support Bridge attachments. Per Luno, they snap to the front headrests and free up space under the head of the mattress.

Compact/Mid vs full-size

Think in two buckets, not a dozen product names.

Compact/Mid: 74 x 50.75 in (S1, P1)

Luno guarantees this size for the vehicles on its Compact/Mid-Size SUV list. That list includes the Ford Bronco Sport, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Crosstrek and Subaru Impreza Hatchback. S1 and P1 share this exact footprint.

Full-size: 80 x 53 in (P2)

Luno guarantees this size for its Full-Size SUV list, which includes the Subaru Outback, Subaru Forester, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot and Jeep Grand Cherokee. P2 is the air plus foam mattress in this footprint.

Check the year and the layout

Toyota RAV4: pre-2018 models are on the Compact/Mid list. 2018 and newer are on the full-size list. Same name, different floor.

Toyota 4Runner: it appears on the full-size list only as "4Runner (3rd Row Seats)." Luno sizes other 4Runner layouts separately, so read the listing closely before you order.

If you drive an Outback or Forester, our vehicle setups go further on sleep, airflow and storage for those models: the Subaru Outback car camping setup and the Subaru Forester car camping setup. This guide stays on mattress fit and construction, so the same checks work for any SUV.

Air vs air plus foam

At the Compact/Mid size you get a real choice: S1 or P1. Same footprint, different build. The P2 is the air plus foam build in the full-size footprint.

Side by side

From the spec lists on Luno's S1, P1 and P2 product pages.
Spec S1 (air) P1 (air plus foam) P2 (air plus foam)
Inflated size 74 x 50.75 x 4 in 74 x 50.75 x 4 in 80 x 53 x 4 in
Build Air, two chambers, inflate one side or both Polyurethane foam plus air, two chambers, firmness per side Polyurethane foam plus air, two chambers, firmness per side
Setup About 2 minutes with the included 12V electric pump Self-inflates to about 60% in 3 to 5 minutes, top off with the included AirRoll Bag. No electric pump. Same as P1
Packed size 8 x 26 in 29 x 11 x 18 in 29 x 11 x 18 in
Packed weight 13 lb 12 lb 12 lb
R-value 1.5 11, rated for four seasons 11, rated for four seasons
Capacity 2 people, 500 lb per side 2 people, 300 lb per side 2 people, 300 lb per side

What that means in practice: the S1 packs much smaller and has a pump in the box, but it gives you very little insulation from a cold floor. The P1 and P2 take up more space when packed, and in return you get foam and a high R-value built into the bed. Weight is close either way, and the foam models list a pound less.

How to decide

  • Mild nights, tight cargo space, or you already carry a warm pad and bag: start with the S1.
  • Cool or cold nights and you want the insulation built in: P1 for Compact/Mid, P2 for full-size.

Fit still comes first

Foam does not fix a mattress that is too long or too wide for the floor.

Keeping the bed warm

The mattress is one layer of the system. A cold floor and cold air under the vehicle pull heat out of you all night if the insulation is thin. A practical stack for cooler nights:

  1. Insulation under you. Of these three, the air plus foam models at R-value 11 are the strong option.
  2. A bag or quilt rated for the real overnight low where you are camping, with some margin.
  3. Block drafts at the hatch seals and the seat fold. A rolled towel at the gap helps more than people expect.
  4. Vent a little. Breath adds moisture, and a damp bag feels colder by morning. Crack a window or two, with screens or rain guards if you have them.
  5. Sleep in dry clothes. Change out of the layers you wore all day before you get in the bag.

Running the S1 in the cold

Add a closed-cell foam pad under or on top of it. R-values of stacked pads roughly add together.

For the rest of the setup beyond sleep, see our car camping setup guide.

Quick checklist before you order

  1. Fold the seats. Measure the length and width of the flat floor.
  2. Match Compact/Mid (74 x 50.75 in) or full-size (80 x 53 in).
  3. Find your vehicle on the product page fit list. If it is not listed, send us your measurements and confirm fit with us before ordering.
  4. Pick air (S1) or air plus foam (P1, P2) based on overnight lows and pack space.
  5. Plan the rest of the sleep system for the coldest night of the trip.

FAQ

Will a car camping mattress fit my Subaru Outback?

The Outback is on Luno's guaranteed fit list for the full-size P2 (80 x 53 in). The Forester and Ascent are on the same list. See the Outback setup post for the rest of that build.

Which size fits a Toyota RAV4?

It depends on the year. Luno lists pre-2018 RAV4s for the Compact/Mid size (S1, P1) and 2018 and newer for the full-size P2.

Can I use an air-only mattress in cold weather?

Yes, but plan for it. The S1 is R-value 1.5, so on cold nights add a foam pad and a warmer bag, or choose the R-value 11 air plus foam version in your size.

What if my vehicle is not on a fit list?

Confirm fit with us before ordering. It helps to measure first: fold the seats, measure the flat floor, and compare it to 74 x 50.75 in (Compact/Mid) or 80 x 53 in (full-size). If the floor is short in either direction, that size is not the one. Send us those numbers along with your year, make and model, and we will check the fit with you.

Do I need to bring a pump?

No. The S1 comes with a 12V electric pump. The P1 and P2 self-inflate to about 60% and you top them off with the included AirRoll Bag. There is no electric pump in the P1 or P2 box.
