2024 Red Subaru Impreza on a mountain road

Subaru Impreza Hatchback Car Camping Setup: Mattress, Airflow, Storage

The Subaru Impreza Hatchback is a small car, but fold the rear seats, open the hatch and the cargo area turns into a real bed for two. Luno names the Impreza Hatchback on its Size 1 mattress list and matches every model year from 2012 to 2026 to that size, so the sleep setup starts on solid ground.

This guide is for the hatchback, and it follows the same plan as our Crosstrek, Forester and Outback setups: a mattress that fits the cargo floor, airflow for warm nights, somewhere for gear that isn't the bed, a small cooler for food, and a short list of things to leave at home. Everything here is in our Impreza collection.

Sleep: a mattress made for the cargo floor

A mattress built for the car is the difference between sleeping and fidgeting. A generic one leaves gaps at the edges or rides up the sides. The Luno Impreza Hatchback mattress is Luno's Size 1, the size Luno lists the Impreza Hatchback under by name. Fold the rear seats and it lies across the cargo floor and the seatbacks, with two Head Support Bridge attachments clipped to the front headrests to carry the head end.

Fits 2012 to 2026

Luno's vehicle fit tool lists the Impreza Hatchback for every model year from 2012 to 2026, and every one of those years gets the same Size 1 mattress. Luno lists the hatchback only, not the sedan.

S1 or P1

Both versions are the same size and both fit, so the choice comes down to how you camp. The S1 is all air, packs small and brings its own pump, which suits a hatchback that still has to do the daily commute. The P1 adds foam for warmth and a softer feel, and it does most of its own inflating. If your trips run into fall and winter, it's the one to get. Here is how they compare.

Luno S1 and P1 side by side. Both are the Size 1 mattress Luno matches to the Impreza Hatchback.

Add the fitted sheet

The Luno Fitted Mattress Sheet in the Compact / Mid-Size SUV size makes the mattress feel more like a bed and less like camping gear. The fabric breathes, it protects the mattress from abrasion and spills, and it packs into its own pouch.

Airflow: window screens and a fan

A small car gets warm and stuffy fast with the windows up. Crack them and the bugs find the gap within minutes. Screens fix that.

Luno Vehicle Window Screens slide over the rear doors so you can leave the windows down all night. They let air through, darken the inside, add privacy and keep insects out. You get two screens and a storage pouch.

Get the Medium

Luno's size chart doesn't name the Impreza, but it puts the Crosstrek, Outback and other compact cars in Medium, and Luno's fit tool offers the Impreza Hatchback the Medium screens with every one of its sleep kits. Medium covers rear door windows 17.5 to 20 in tall and 27 to 38 in wide, measured with the door frame. Large is sized for bigger windows like the Forester's.

The Luno Car Camping Fan sticks to a window or the dash with a locking suction cup, aims on a ball mount and has three speeds. It also adds a little white noise, which helps at a busy campground. It runs from a USB port or a power bank.

Bring a power bank

A charged USB power bank runs the fan through the night without leaning on the car battery.

Storage: use the ceiling

Once the mattress is down, the cargo floor is the bed. The Luno Cargo Hammock moves the small stuff up to the ceiling. In Compact Mode the net rolls into its own zippered pocket and stays out of the way on daily drives. Adventure Mode unrolls another 8.5 sq ft of mesh for a jacket, a headlamp and water bottles. A clear media pocket holds a phone or tablet at an angle you can watch from the mattress.

Where it hangs

Luno's fit info lists six attachment points: the two front grab handles, the two rear grab handles and the two hinges at the top of the hatch. Luno says it fits most SUVs and hatchbacks and rules out only the 6th gen 4Runner. It doesn't name the Impreza, so this is the one piece of the kit Luno hasn't confirmed for this car. If you are not sure your car has all six points, confirm with us before ordering.

One thing you notice the first night: in a car this size the hammock hangs close to the dome light, so a headlamp clipped to one of its loops ends up being the easier light. Anything that won't fit overhead can ride on the front seats.

Food: a small cooler that rides up front

With the bed down there's no floor left for a hard cooler, so go small and soft. The Dometic Recon Softside ZL Small 12L Cooler holds 19 cans, and Dometic shapes the Recon ZL line to fit tailgates and seat wells. By day it rides in the cargo area. At night it moves to the front passenger footwell, clear of the bed. The lid has no zipper and opens from either side with one hand, which is handy when you're reaching for it from the mattress.

Setup walkthrough

  1. Fold the rear seats and clear the cargo area.
  2. Lay the mattress across the cargo floor and the folded seatbacks, then clip the Head Support Bridge attachments to the front headrests.
  3. Inflate it. The S1 fills with its included pump. The P1 does most of the work itself, then you top it off with the AirRoll Bag.
  4. Put on the fitted sheet.
  5. Slide the window screens over the rear doors and lower the windows.
  6. Stick the fan to a window and plug it into a power bank.
  7. Clip the cargo hammock to the grab handles and hatch hinges, and load it with what you want close at night.
  8. Move the cooler to the front passenger footwell.

In the morning, reverse the steps. The mattress packs into its carrying case.

Camp gear, not driving gear

Subaru's Impreza owner's manual says not to attach accessories to the assist grips, side windows or pillars, where the curtain airbags deploy. The hammock, fan and window screens go up when you park and come down before you drive.

What to skip

  • A generic air mattress. One that is not sized for the car leaves gaps or bunches against the sides.
  • A big hard cooler on the cargo floor. With the bed down there is no room for it. A small soft cooler like the Recon ZL Small rides in the front footwell instead.
  • Piling gear on the bed. Use the hammock and the front seats instead.

FAQ

Which model years does the Impreza mattress fit?

Every Impreza Hatchback from 2012 to 2026. Luno's vehicle fit tool matches all of those years to its Size 1 mattress, which is the size on this page in both the S1 and the P1 version. Luno lists the hatchback, not the sedan.

Should I get the S1 or the P1?

Get the S1 if you want the smaller pack and a pump in the box. Get the P1 if your trips run into cold weather. It is the much warmer of the two, and the table above has the numbers.

Do I need to buy a pump?

No. The S1 comes with its own electric pump. The P1 inflates itself most of the way, and you finish it with the AirRoll Bag that comes with it.

Which window screen size do I need?

Medium. Luno's size chart doesn't name the Impreza, but it puts the Crosstrek, Outback and other compact cars in Medium, and Luno's fit tool offers the Impreza Hatchback the Medium screens with every one of its sleep kits. Large is sized for bigger windows like the Forester's and the Ascent's.

Will the cargo hammock fit my Impreza?

Luno's fit info says the hammock hangs from six points: the two front grab handles, the two rear grab handles and the two hinges at the top of the hatch. Luno says it fits most SUVs and hatchbacks and rules out only the 6th gen 4Runner. It doesn't name the Impreza either way, so it's the one piece of this kit without a confirmed fit. If you are not sure your car has all six points, confirm with us before ordering. Subaru's owner's manual also says not to attach accessories to the assist grips, which sit near the curtain airbags, so hang it at camp and take it down before you drive.

Can I add a hitch step to an Impreza?

Not the one we carry. Our hitch step needs a 2 in receiver, and the hitches built for the Impreza Hatchback use a 1-1/4 in receiver. CURT lists 1-1/4 in for every hatchback year from 2012 to 2026, and Draw-Tite's Impreza hitch is 1-1/4 in too. We don't carry a 1-1/4 in step, so we left it out of this kit.
