The JK is the Wrangler built for the 2007 to 2018 model years. The JL replaced it as a 2018 model and is the current Wrangler, so 2018 is the one year when both were sold new.

The short answer: confirm which one you have before you buy a single part, because most bumpers, sliders, racks and radio kits fit one generation only. Below we show how to tell them apart, what changed, and the JK and JL parts we sell side by side. Vehicle facts come from Jeep. Product specs come from each maker. Where a maker does not publish a number, we say "not published" instead of guessing.

How to tell a JK from a JL

Walk around the front of the Jeep and check these in order:

  • Grille and headlights. On a JL the two outer grille slots cut into the headlights. On a JK each headlight sits in its own round opening.
  • Front turn signals. A JL has LED turn signals on the front of the fender flares. On a JK they sit in the grille below the headlights.
  • Windshield bolts. A JL windshield folds down with four bolts across the top of the frame.
  • Door hinges. Jeep stamps the Torx bit size on JL door hinges.
  • Ignition. Most JLs start with a push button. JKs start with a key.

2018 owners

Both generations were sold as 2018 models, and some 2018s were the older JK Unlimited. Check the grille and headlights before you order.

What else changed with the JL

  • Aluminum doors, hinges, hood, fender flares and windshield frame, plus a magnesium swing gate.
  • Selec-Trac full time two speed transfer case offered on the Sahara, a first for Wrangler.
  • Rubicon Rock-Trac with a 4:1 low range, Dana 44 axles, Tru-Lok lockers and an electronic sway bar disconnect.

Winch rating

Match the winch to the bumper. Body Armor rates the JK Mid-Stubby to 10,000 lb winches. DV8 says its plate fits up to a WARN 12-S EVO.

Sleeping in a Wrangler

A 4-door Wrangler cargo floor is short, wide and cut up by wheel wells. Luno's AIR Pro in the Wrangler and Bronco cut measures 74 x 53 x 4 inches inflated, with two chambers and a 12V pump included. Luno lists it for the 2018 to 2026 Wrangler 4-door (JL) and says it does not fit the 2007 to 2017 JK 4-door or any 2-door Wrangler.
