How much weight can the Swagman E-Spec Pro carry in total?
Up to 160 lb with two bikes, at a maximum of 80 lb per bike, per Swagman. When the rack is installed on a travel RV, the limit drops to 70 lb per bike. Swagman states that the rack plus bikes must not exceed the maximum rating of the hitch or bumper it mounts to.
Can I roll heavy e-bikes onto the E-Spec Pro instead of lifting them?
Yes, with Swagman's Ramp and Bridge, part 66690, sold separately. The telescoping ramp rests on the E-Spec Pro so you can roll a bike up into the wheel trays, and the bridge rests between the trays so you can finish rolling it into position. The ramp is rated to 80 lb, and Swagman says it works best with its Roll-Thru Wheel Trays, part 11341.
How much ground clearance does the E-Spec Pro need?
At least 14 inches on a passenger vehicle, per Swagman. On an RV or trailer, clearance must exceed 15 inches and varies by setup, and a bumper mount needs a continuous steel welded bumper per the trailer maker. Swagman says the rack fits 2 inch receivers only and is not suitable for use with hitch extenders.
How do I tilt the E-Spec Pro and strap bikes on?
Lift the locking lever and pull the handle firmly to tilt the rack down or fold it up; fold the locking lever down for transport. Swagman says to place each hook on the lowest part of the bike's top tube, then center the straps and buckle them on the rear wheel. A vertical anti wobble device slides onto the drawbar before the rack goes into the receiver.
Is the E-Spec Pro rated for rough dirt roads?
No. Swagman designs it for paved or smooth gravel roads and warns against rough roads or constant jarring, and against vehicles with very stiff springs that pass shock to the rack. Tall accessories such as a child seat add wind load, so Swagman suggests slowing down. Keep plastic, rubber and carbon parts at least 6 inches from exhaust pipes.
How do I stop the E-Spec Pro from rusting?
Store it indoors when you are not using it. Swagman says keeping the rack inside protects its powder coating, which is what prevents rust. Pad any part of the load that might touch the vehicle to avoid damage. Swagman also fits set screws to the crossbars so the wheel trays cannot slide off.
