Safety and Navigation
The Garmin inReach Mini 2 is the most important piece of gear in this collection. It's a two-way satellite communicator that works anywhere on earth with no cell signal required. You can send and receive messages, trigger an SOS, and share your location with people tracking you from home. If you spend time in the backcountry alone or in areas without cell coverage, this is the item worth prioritizing. The Black Diamond Beta Headlamp and Hiker Medic first aid kit round out the safety basics.
Water Purification
We carry two GRAYL options here. The GeoPress (24oz) filters a full bottle in about eight seconds using a press-through mechanism that removes viruses, bacteria, and particulates. The UltraPress is the lighter, smaller sibling at 16.9oz with the same purification standard. Both use replaceable cartridges. For a day hike with a known water source, either works. For longer trips in questionable water environments, the GeoPress wins on capacity per press.
Bags and Sleep
The Rapid 26L is a roll-top dry pack that works as a hiking daypack and doubles as a waterproof gear bag for river crossings or wet conditions. The Sea to Summit Comfort Deluxe Self-Inflating Sleeping Mat is on the heavier end for backpacking but is one of the more comfortable options available if you are car camping or doing short approach trips where weight is less critical.
Camp Kitchen
The cooking lineup here runs from ultralight to comfortable. The Esbit Solid Fuel Stoves are the lightest option - fuel tablets, minimal components, nothing to break. The Trekker's Alcohol Cookset is a step up with an integrated windscreen and a 985ml pot. For a more complete setup, the Sea to Summit Alpha Pot Cooksets offer hard-anodized aluminum pots in 2.1L and 4.2L configurations. The ECO Mess Kits are the car camp option - durable aluminum sets with plates, bowls, and utensils included.
For cookware, the TOAKS Titanium Double Wall Cup and 3-piece Cutlery Set are solid additions to any kit where weight matters. The Sea to Summit X-Pot Kettle and X-Brew Coffee Dripper are collapsible and pack nearly flat, which makes them easy to add without thinking much about it.
