Just getting started
Howdy,
This is the very first Gearlanders blog post — and the perfect place to tell you exactly who we are, why we exist, and how we’re making overlanding and truck customization easier for real people.
My name is Sean. I’m an Arizona-based overlander, weekend warrior, and the founder of Gearlanders.com. After years of camping, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, paddling, snowboarding, and chasing sunsets in the Southwest, I got fed up with the same headache every time I needed gear.
The Paddle Board That Started It All
In 2018 I bought an eleven-foot paddle board and immediately hit a wall trying to haul it on my 2018 Toyota Tacoma. I just wanted a simple bed rack to support the tail of the board — nothing fancy. What I found online was ridiculous.
You had two terrible options:
- Bolt a permanent, ugly contraption straight into your truck bed (drilling holes you’ll regret later)
- Drop big money on an aluminum doohickey designed for a roof top tent you didn’t even own
The same story kept repeating with kayaks, bikes, and recovery boards. We’ve all seen the guy driving down the highway with his arm out the window holding down a load. Unsafe, stressful, and completely avoidable.
That frustration became the spark for Gearlanders.
Why Most Overlanding Sites Fall Short
The second big problem I kept running into was truck customization. Overlanding is huge in the western U.S., and people spend hours hunting for suspension lifts, winches, rock sliders, light bars, and tonneau covers.
But the websites were terrible:
- No clear vehicle compatibility (will this tonneau fit my 2015 F-150?)
- Confusing navigation
- Generic product descriptions with stock photos
- Questionable quality and fitment info
I knew there had to be a better way — a site built by actual overlanders for actual overlanders.
What Gearlanders Was Built to Solve
We created Gearlanders so you can shop the way you actually think:
Shop by Activity Overlanding • Car Camping • Paddling • Mountain Biking • Fishing • Snowboarding
Shop by Vehicle Toyota Tacoma (2016–2026) • Ford Bronco (2021+) • Jeep Gladiator • 4Runner • Van Life
Every product page now includes:
- Exact year/make/model compatibility notes
- Real-world use-case scenarios (“Perfect for weekend desert runs or two-week overland trips”)
- Large, detailed photos (not just manufacturer shots)
- Honest specs and limitations
Our Promise to You
- Vehicle-specific accuracy so you never order the wrong part
- Curated selection — only gear we’d actually run on our own rigs
- Fast U.S. shipping
- Real customer service from people who actually use the stuff
We’re not a giant warehouse. We’re a small, passionate team that obsesses over fitment and durability so you don’t have to.
Beginner Overlanding Checklist (Start Here)
If you’re just getting started, focus on these four upgrades first:
- Proper roof rack or bed rack rated for your exact truck
- Recovery boards + traction aid (trust me — sand and mud don’t care about stock tires)
- Reliable LED light bar (combo beam for trails + camp setup)
- Modular storage that grows with your adventures
Where We Are Today (March 2026)
The site is fully live, we’ve partnered with top suppliers (including Heretic Studio, Prinsu, and many others), and we add new vehicle-specific products every week. Whether you drive a Tacoma, Bronco, or building a van life rig, we’ve got you covered.
Thanks for being here at the beginning of the journey. We can’t wait to hear about your adventures and help you get properly equipped.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I know if a product will actually fit my truck? Every product page includes exact year/make/model compatibility notes (e.g., “Fits 2016–2023 Toyota Tacoma with 5-ft or 6-ft bed”). We double-check fitment with suppliers and real-world testing. Still unsure? Drop us a photo of your rig and we’ll confirm before you order.
- What’s the best starter setup for someone new to overlanding? Start simple: a proper roof rack or bed rack, recovery boards, and a quality LED light bar. These three items solve 80% of beginner problems and work across most trucks. We’ve built dedicated collections for each so you can mix and match without guesswork.
- Should I buy a roof rack or bed rack first? Depends on your truck and main activities. Tacoma and Bronco owners usually start with a roof rack for tents and gear storage. If you haul kayaks, paddle boards, or bikes often, a bed rack is usually more practical and easier to install.
- How fast does shipping actually take? Most orders ship same or next business day via our U.S. partners. You’ll see estimated delivery at checkout (typically 3–7 business days to the lower 48). We’re based in Arizona, so West Coast orders often arrive faster.
- Do you offer help choosing gear for my specific vehicle? Absolutely. Use the “Shop by Vehicle” navigation or reach out directly. We’re real overlanders — not just an order desk — and we’re happy to help you avoid the wrong purchase.
Cheers, Sean
